14th March 2000: court sitting lasted half hour, case deferred. Experts had not finished their investigations. The case was deferred because the handwriting and fingerprint experts had not concluded their investigations.

16th March 2000: In-Nazzjon Newspaper (A Nationalist Party rag) published an exclusive report. In it they alleged that the stationery used to send the anonymous letters came from parliament. Joseph Ellul-Grech did not have any connections to anyone in parliament. However, John Dalli did, he was Finance Minister at the time.

In brief the above article gives details that the costs involved in sending these 20, 000 anonymous letters would have been Lm2, 000 (€4, 600 approximately). It also explained that there was a number of different handwritings on the envelopes and that it would have been impossible for one person to send such a large amount of letters by post.

The article goes on to say that Mario Galea a Nationalist Party MP who was the Government’s Whip alleged that Labour Party MP’s had asked for a large amount of A4 paper without watermark. He alleged that the Labour Party did not state what the paper was used for.  In the same parliamentary sitting the Prime Minister Dr. Eddie Fenech Adami accused the opposition of using government stationery to print false statements to send to the public.

Mario Galea MP (Nationalist Party) happened to be the person that on the morning of the 16th November 1999 at approximately 2.00am was involved in a serious car accident on St. Ann’s Street Floriana. The accident was recorded on the CCTV security cameras of the USA Embassy. Allegedly Mario Galea had bundles of these letters in his car.

17th March 2000 The In-Nazzjon newspaper (an organ of the Nationalist Party whose main mission is to cover up  the scandals committed by PN MP's ) published another article. In it the PM Eddie Fenech Adami accused Labour Party MP’s of using government stationery to send the anonymous letters.

Despite these developments confirming that the defendant was not involved in the sending of these letters the legal proceedings against him continued. At a later stage the Auditor General's investigations were finalized and concluded that the Labour Party had no connection to the anonymous letters.
